The aftermath of the 1987 Hurricane

Video showing damage taken by John Dawkins.

John Dawkins has given us the opportunity to show this video of damage caused by the famous ‘hurricane’ of October 17th 1987 at various location on the Island.

The first scenes show damage to roofs in Beach Close and Station Rd and a wrecked bus-shelter at Seaview. Divert to overview of devastated caravans at Holehaven Caravan Park and felled trees and telegraph pole in Haven Rd. Back to the seafront area to survey damage on and around the Peerless Playdium(now Starr Cinema etc) includes almost roofless toilet block. The Windjammer has lost an A and the Admiral Jellicoe has almost lost it’s title with no ADM.

Although very much in it’s final stages the wind from the ‘hurricane’ can be heard buffeting video-camera microphone and it’s effect can be seen in the intervening shots over the sea-wall. The final shot shows downed telephone line and tilted pole in Roggel Rd.

Thanks very much John for giving us the chance to watch this.
