Canvey Businesses

1977

Halcon Transport closed down, but wonders if the other two on the envelopes are still in business.

  • Hi

One business that was short lived was the pleasure flights that operated on Canvey in the Twenties. These took place between 1927 and 1928 on the field behind the amusement arcades where Lubbins Park school is now. The company was the Henderson flying school with two Avro 548 biplanes. One of them crashed on landing with no injuries to pilot or passenger but was later written of as beyond repair. Colonel Henderson retired soon afterwards. Thanks to author Graham Smith for the info.

On a similar note – Possibly anticipating ww2, Canvey council wrote to the air ministry in 1936 inviting them to build a seaplane base at Tewkes creek. Or was it an attempt to improve tourism?
