This great photo of an old Canvey bungalow was sent in by Bernard Harris. It was taken about 1911/12 at a time when the Luther family either rented or owned the property. The Luthers were Bernard’s mother’s family.
Verandahs and outdoor loos were a must-have in early Canvey. If you’d escaped from London’s East End this would have been heaven. Here they not only wanted a verandah for the fresh air, they wanted an all-round view as well. Typically early Canvey.

Looking at the Poor rate books for Canvey. Normanhust was occupied and owned by Chas. MITCHAM in Spring of 1911, but by Autumn of 1911, it was owned by Mrs LUTHER.
1912 described as Mrs Blanche LUTHER.
Looking at the Electoral Rolls, the LUTHER’s appear in division 3 of the 1913 Roll – LUTHER, Blanche, Pioneer Lodge, Church road, Leyton,
by 1918 LUTHER, Ellen, Normanhurst, Leigh Beck, abode Finlay Villa, 74 Church Road, Leyton
