  • Hi Jane, are you able to tell me whether Charles Saul lived at the 21 The Avenue address during WW11 ??  I lived on The Parkway during that time and I think that I remember the Sauls. I also remember a boy getting accidentally hit in an eye by a stone during a silly stone throwing incident between small boy gangs. Your comment about the family reminded me of that long forgotten happening!!

  • Hi Gerald

My Grandfather came to Canvey to help construct the Colvin Bridge. Infact he named one of his children Colvin. They did live there through WW2 don’t know about stone throwing but my Nana was ferocious and would stand up for her children even if they were not always in the right .Grandad I am told was a friendly easy going type who spent rather too much time in the Haystack.

  • This picture was taken in about 1962 Gerald. Charles had 5 children out of the 3 boys one was Colvin, a farmer one was Frank the Tottenham footballer, and Albert was a boxer if anyone was involved in a gang Mmmm?

  • Hi again Jane:

thanks for responding to my question regarding the Sauls, because you confirmed that my ( aged ) memory was right, and that they did live there during the war!! The stone throwing did happen too, and it was small boy gangs playing war games!! A boy did get hit in the eye, I can’t remember who he was, but the name Saul was known to me and I vaguely remember a lady dressing us all down following that incident……thanks again Jane.

  • My father Albert Saul would like to correct a statement above made by Jane Parkin. He was never a boxer and never belonged to any gang. He joined the Navy at 15 and spent many years travelling around the world. Thank you…………….
