  • Hi Catherine, Yes, these were my thoughts too. I recognised the the fence that ran along that remaining piece of Fielders land on the N. side of Thorney Bay Rd between Craven Ave and the end of Mayland. Looks like it was taken in the heavy snow we had in ( I think) early 1987. P.S. I hope you don’t mind me asking but are you Johnny Hubbard’s sister? I started at Westciff High with him(travelling on the train) and it may be just a coincidence but he used to live in that area ( Mayland or Beverley). Regards Graham.

  • Hallo Graham, you are correct, I am John’s sister. We grew up on Mayland Avenue.I have enjoyed keeping up with the Canvey info. from Michigan in the USA. Regards, Catherine.

  • Hello Catherine and Graham, Yes you are both correct in that the photo was taken at the end of Mayland Avenue. Our house was the second back, you can just see the tall chimneys. Catherine, I spoke to John today, I am in South Africa but we are still in touch after 66 years and were best friends until we both moved away. Graham, I remember well meeting you on Benfleet station on our first day at Westcliff High. You gave an excellent redition of Elvis Presley singing Blue Suede Shoes on the platform.

  • Hi Rob, This is amazing! I was reminded of you when I made my previous comment as I remembered that you also lived in the same area round the back of Jones’s. It’s great that that you and John have kept in touch for all these years. To be honest I don’t actually remember that particular rendition of Blue Suede Shoes but thanks for the compliment. I do know those were the ‘Happy Days’ on the Canvey bus, on the train to Leigh and then on the 21 bus to Westcliff. In the winter when the trains were late cos of the smog we’d miss the 21 and wend our way on foot to school sometimes arriving well after 10 o’clock. As for the Elvis performance I guess I’ve never given up on those early aspirations from the 60s with The Premiers(see page on this site) and then from the mid 80s to the present singing with a band of other ,shall we say ‘veterans'(except our lady singer) which includes my brother Chris on drums and Fred Ford(ex Whirlwind/Force Five, Premiers and Monico piano) on keyboards. Maybe this year we should chuck out some Chuck Berry and try some other Elvis numbers. ‘Long Live Rock’n’ Roll’ !!!

  • These were taken early ‘80s – we left Canvey autumn ’85 so it was before then.

We left Mayland Ave. where these were taken In ’84 so I would guess they were taken between ’80 and ’83
