From a newspaper clipping:-

In May 1978 Council Chairman Ray Howard really mucked in when he laid the foundation stone of Canvey’s super new £3 million shopping centre.

For Coun. Howard borrowed a bricklayer’s donkey jacket and flat cap to get the feel of the occasion.

Then to mark the event he was presented with an inscribed silver trowel by Mr Tom Howe, managing director of developers French Kier.
