This photo shows the shop called Our Bakers. On the front it says Our Bakers Mr Marsh. It has a large sign to the left advertising ‘The Haystack’ and the ‘Southend Times’. This was taken around the 1920s.

As I thought, this building is in Furtherwick Road next to the Haystack PH. It later became the Co-op food stores. You can see the baker’s shop in Norman Chisolm’s photos on the Archive – added on 11/09/2011. The unusual stepped roof can be clearly seen as can the Our Baker sign. The Haystack must have had a garden at that time – note their advert on the picket fence.
Well spotted Michael. You mean where Iceland is now. So the ladies are walking north up Furtherwick Road.
