Canvey Village Postcard

Date? Possibly 30s

Postcard of the village showing the red Cow public House on the left. The Post office in the middle (these shops are still standing today) and the village Pump
Village Stores and Post Office
Village Pump and another shop on the right

The Red Cow PH was pulled down in 1937 so this photo was taken prior to that. The people in the picture are not clear enough to date their clothing although I can see some ankles which is why I am dating it late 20s early 30s.

  • Looking at the Telegraph pole in the picture. The question I have is this “Mains Electricity” or  “The Telegraph”.

“Mains Electricity” came in 1931 along with the opening of the bridge. Street lighting also came at this date, or at least along the main roads, with swan neck lights.

“The telegraph” arrived in Feb 1908, Planning permission being advertised at the end of 1907.

I suspect this is the Telegraph so picture dated after 1907/1908
