Casino Horses Fly Away

By Andrew Jackson

Kev Rides

On Casino horses let me ride away
To my world of dreams so far away
Let me run
To the sun

To a world my heart can understand
Warm and gentle Canvey Island
Far away
Stars away

Where the clouds are made of candyfloss
As the day’s born
When the stars are gone
We’ll race to meet the dawn

So when I can only see the grey
Of a sad and very lonely day
That’s when I
Softly sigh
On Casino horses
Cherished Casino horses
Let me ride away

Away

Away

Away

In all their Glory

Thankyou to Andrew Jackson for the Poem. Above and below is a collection of my photographs of the Horses that used to proudly stand outside the Canvey Casino until she was sadly demolished. They were moved outside Fantasy Island where they continued to give pleasure to countless Canvey Islanders and visitors until a car smashed into them last week (See article HERE).

  • I lived at the Canvey Casino (owned by A.H. Beaumont) as a young boy 1954-1958 and can remember the horse always being on the front forecourt and the lady that used to be in charge of them, I never realised that they were to become icons !! Are the Swanns the same family that used to have work and have a shop at the Casino I can remember Clarrie (General Manager) and Lilley Swann she had a gift shop inside the Casino my dad Bob Morris was the maintenance man.

  • Have just seen the comment from John Morris and felt I had to respond. Yes John, it is the same family. Clary is my dad and Lily was my aunt. Dad is keeping very well, he is 93 now but doesnt look it. We lost Lily a few years ago. My sister still has business on the seafront.

  • I remember our Sunday afternoon walks along the seafront and we would stop by the casino to talk to Clarrie. My parents Peter and Phyllis Owens were great friends with Clarrie. I used to get a ride on the horses.
