A tasty way to raise funds

Echo Clipping 1987

Tasty homemade cakes were almost too tempting for these young cubs. The 4th Canvey Sea Scouts raised £1,300 at its Christmas bazaar and grand draw at the island’s Furtherwick Park School

The money will go towards renting its hall at Tewkes Creek Pavilion and buying new camping equipment for a trip to Holland in the New Year.

Group scout leader Alan Evans said: “The turnout was disappointing, but we are happy with the money we raised. The scouts work hard for the bazaar each year but I think it is getting more difficult to make money.”

About 150 people went to the bazaar but the group usually expects nearer 300. Father Christmas was there along with handicraft stalls, a tombola, a count-the-marbles-in-a-jar competition and cake stalls.

There are 150 Canvey boys in the group aged from six to 20. This year younger members have been singing carols at old people’s homes.
