Canvey in Art
Does anyone recognise the name C.L. Shayes? In an effort to trace local artists from the past, especially those who illustrated local scenes, I had been told about Harry (Jack) Russell, one of a ‘bohemian’ group of settlers who apparently lived on a houseboat in Benfleet Creek. A mark of recognition, I was told, was that his work always featured the Chapman Lighthouse in the background. I managed to speak to one of his sons, Simon Russell, and th...
Patch and the Ponies
Memories from Graham Stevens Patch in the Pony Field with ‘Bess’ & her foal ‘Suprise’ at Gafzelle Drive I think it was in 1950 that I picked him out of a sort of bran tub in St Anne’s Pet shop. He was with three other little furry bundles. He stood out because he was sort of dappled white with two black patches on his back; the other pups were just black or brown. c1950: Mums Dad Charles Porteous with Patch as a Puppy No problem with a name then,...
Rev Joseph Overs & the Canvey Island Monster!
I have seen the question on the Archive Forum ‘Who was the Rev. Joseph Overs?’ particularly in connection with the mythical ‘Canvey Monster’. In the 50’s-60’s I would imagine everybody on Canvey knew Joe. He was ‘The Canvey Photographer’. I first remember him in the summers of the early fifties doing beach photography and bustling in and out of Jackson’s Photo Kiosk at Andrews Arcade (at the end of May Avenue). Jacksons Kiosk Many will remember h...
The life of Clara James
The Girls Bungalow at Lakeside I am the great niece of Miss Clara James who contributed a lot to Canvey Island. In 1909 she opened a rest home for overworked Eastend girls at lakeside. Miss James was also a member of Canvey council, a J P and a school manager, and a founder member of the womens institute and was also involved in the nursing association. I would like to know if anybody has any information or photos of her as I am trying to compile...
My years as a WRVS Volunteer
I first joined the WRVS back in 1987 as a helper at the newly opened Luncheon club in Poplar Road. The luncheon club was very busy in those days, opening three days a week and up to 40 elderly and disabled people attended. The meals on wheels was also heated and distributed from the premises, so it was always a hive of activity. WRVS membership card With the elderly arriving on foot or by assisted transport and with the WRVS helpers both from the...
WRVS Luncheon Club Easter Tradition
... The Easter Bonnet Parade has been an annual event at the club ever since it started. As you can see by the last picture below it is still popular. Sydervelt Centre Easter 1984 The following pictures are mostly from before the new building in Poplar Road was opened in 1987 and are from the only album to survive the fire that gutted the club a few years ago. I would like to thank the WRVS for allowing us to publish them. ...

Early 1950's Canvey photos
Barbara with her parents George and Martha Merry and grandparents Ernie and Martha Cox moved to Canvey from Notting Hill in 1946. At first they all lived at no 15 Green Avenue, then in 1951 Barbara’s parents moved their family just down the road to no 4. Barbara remembers when she was due to go to senior school she was not able to start at Furtherwick School because the new building had not been finished. Barbara spent her first year of senior sc...
Houseboat Fire, 17th May 1956, East Creek, South Benfleet
It had everything for a good thriller: The death of twin boys … Two burning houseboats ... An old view of Leigh Beck High Street
I recently bought this old Post Card as it is of an area close to my heart, Leigh Beck. The Photographer is standing in Canvey High Street between Baardwyk Avenue & St Annes Road (then called Norrbotten Avenue) looking east towards the Bus Terminus. The Photograph is from c1921. Looking East along Canvey High Street Canvey High Street was then called London Road as was quite common at the time – all roads eventually led to London! I have also see...

We have a whole section on it. Plus it is mentioned in at least to articles. Try putting Sunnyside in the search engine. You will find adverts and all sorts....
