Where or what was it? And when?***Update***
This picture came to me some time ago from the Jackie Barnes collection. Her father used to run an antiques and junkshop in Benfleet High Road and he had quite a collection of local images acquired from house clearances. This Canvey image has long puzzled me, as nobody I asked could identify it. Does anyone know where and what it was? (Or maybe is?) There seems to be smoke coming from the tall thin chimney… Hi, Dave and Graham. Following your com...

St Katherine's Church Derelict

Paul has kindly given the Canvey Comminity Archive permission to publish the photos here on CanveyIsland.org The Main Gate with plaque “This Gate was erected by Colonel Horace Fielder in memory of his Mother Susan Fielder 1874 – 1947. Leigh Beck Baptist Church: War - Flood - Survival
1939 and the commencement of the Second World War. Canvey was bombed and people were killed. According to Vera Jones, she said they would stand and watch as the VI and V2 Doodlebugs came down on the Island. As so often in times of crisis, love rises to the surface and people are geared into action. Community spirit is fostered or even re-born. And so it was during the time of war on this Island and especially in Leigh Beck Baptist Church. The mem...
The Dark Mirror, a word cycle (Canvey Island & Beyond)
Bernard Durrant has given us permission to publish the part of his book that covers his time living on Canvey Island when he was a boy. Bernard is now in his nineties and still writing. The following is from the back cover of his book. Bernard Durrant was born in Wimbledon in London and was educated at private schools. His early boyhood was spent on Canvey Island, a world unspoilt landscape in the Twenties and Thirties, a beautiful but ominous wo...

Charactors from Canvey's past: F. Hester
Frederick Hester portrait courtesy of his granddaughter Carol Mayers ‘WHATEVER HAPPENED TO… The long ignored contributions to Canvey Island as a people rather than an agricultural/pastoral environment – it’s development as a seaside resort and settlement – is largely due to one man, though one can include his son’s efforts into the equation. Frederick Hester and his son F.W.B. Hester, unlike many modern developers, were concerned with the actual ...
Winter Gardens Baptist Church
In June 2009 the church celebrates 83 years of work and witness on the site. The land was donated by George Chambers back in 1926 when all that could be seen on every side were fields and the occasional verandered bungalow. The church family then had a vision that in time the area would be developed for housing and a church would be needed for the new population. How right they were!! The first church building was wooden, built on stilts and had ...

Childhood Memories of Canvey Island
These memories were added to the guestbook on my Canvey website by Des Sythes in 2007 and I feel they warrent inclusion on the Archive. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I moved with my parents aged ten in 1938 to Canvey, and lived there for the whole of the war. Knockout teams have a glourious mudbath for charity
A 1973 Evening Echo newspaper cutting. Canvey lifeguards were up to their knees in mud on Sunday – and it helped to raise £72 for the BUST appeal. The lifeguards and six other teams from the island took part in an It’s a Knockout Competition off Concord Beach – and some of the high jinks are pictured. While the teams were in action members of the lifeguards made a collection among the scores of spectators. The BUST appeal is to raise cash for a b...
