They were in an album donated by John and Eileen Potter and all notations found about the pictures have been added to the pictures. The Worlds End
Nestling close to the sea wall at Hole Haven on Canvey Island and now somewhat overshadowed by the mammoth ugliness of mushrooming oil storage tanks stands the old and celebrated Lobster Smack Inn. For centuries a small tavern has occupied this remote corner of Essex, offering comfort and refuge to sailors and welcome respite for the occasional travellers visiting these outlying districts. On their fine map published in 1777 Chapman and Andre sho...

A shopping basket full of memories of Leigh Beck (part 3)
Crossing the High Street/Point Road from the Jellicoe, across what must have been , in the past, the Bus terminus (I believe an early name for the Jellicoe was the Terminus Hotel) we must make a slight detour in an easterly direction to the field which now is the site of Leigh Beck School. In the early 50’s this field was grazed by two beautiful horses, a bay shire and a black Suffolk punch. Their job was to pull the coal carts for MacHayes Coaly...

Canvey Lifeguards to the rescue!!!!!!
The helicopter was the Queens Flight when Prince Philip came to Bradwell to review his D.of E. Award Scheme. The organiser, Peter Gurnel, was badly let down as it was awful weather and very few other organizations turned up, so the Canvey Lifeguards turned to and became all things to all men-from first aid to knots, sailing to engine maintenance. Cyril and Katie Mallet rushed over to Danbury where he was off to next, to man the archery stand as t...

Leigh Beck Baptist Church: The Vision
Rev. Frank Brown Rev. Frank Brown came to lead the Church in 1960. The reader will remember that there had been a vision of a new church being built. It was during The Rev. Brown gave an astounding speech in 1962 viz: ‘Next year, 1963, is the Diamond Jubilee of our Church and your Deacons lovingly and prayerfully bring before you the following suggestions for your brotherly consideratio...
