In 1982 his wife, Violet, died of cancer and it was following this that he decided to do a re-enactment of the Frankton Operation by paddling up the River Gironde to Bordeaux to raise money for Cancer. It was in the waters round Canvey that he did his training. He said the journey this time was a lot safer but harder. He was then 61 years old.
