There used to be an old blacksmiths on Canvey rd on the site where the chapel of rest is now in the 1950s. It was run by Harry Bateman who doubled up as an undertakers for Stibbard. This could be him.

The picture is definitely of Harry Bateman in his smithy. I lived in the Red Cow until 1940 and as a child I used to go and watch him at work as he was just down the road from us.
