BBC Schools Report

Castle View joins in as it goes live

More than 1,000 schools across the UK have made the news as School Report News Day went live. Find out what stories they reported on as they turned their classrooms into newsrooms.

Castle View School is one of those 1,000. Today their School Report page went live and their main story has been about Dean Macey opening the new school.

Dean Macey interviewed by By Jack & Nicolas 8JEH

In January 2012, Castle View School moved from its old home of the last 30 years to a brand new building right in the centre of Canvey town, on Canvey Island in Essex. The new school was one of the last schools built under the Building Schools for the Future programme which was cancelled by the coalition Government when it came into power in 2010.

So when the school was finally built, the big question was “Who should be invited to open the new school?”

Well, Canvey is famous for quite a number of achievers in different fields; in music, Dr Feelgood and Lucy Duffield (X-factor finalist and ‘Nancy’ contender for Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s I’ll Do Anything), and in sport, footballers Ty Gooden and Steven Bourne, and athletes World Bronze runner Jessica Judd and Olympian Decathlete and Commonwealth Gold medallist Dean Macey.

Nostalgic about his old school, Dean Macey jumped at the chance of fulfilling this priviliged role. In this interview he speaks openly about his experiences at our school and how they helped him become such an amazing role model to our students then, now and certainly in years to come.

But what does he think about our new building?

How much does he miss his school days?

What does think about the new technologies available to us?

  • Was this the interview as this was filmed last month? There were students walking around today with ‘BBC ID’ badges on.

  • The interview with Dean was filmed on February 21st which was the school’s opening launch and student awards evening. Dean officially opened the school and presented student awards. The interview was one of a few short news features prepared by 30 students at Castle View School for the BBC School Report 2012 day which took place on 15th March. Brad Simpson, Canvey based chef and also an ex-Castle View student, served great hors d’oeuvres through the official opening week.
