Leigh Beck School

1954 till 1960

I was at Leighbeck from 1954-1960 but the last year we were in a hall at St Anns. Mr Groves was my teacher. Mrs Vincent was the Headmistress in those days. I always remember the little sweet shop at St Anns that went years ago. I loved the christmas parties at Leighbeck school.

I then went to Canvey Secondary school. Mr Watkins was Head, always remember Mr Eels, Mr Light, pe teacher, Mr Potter, Mr Sharp.

  • I was at leigh Beck from 1960-1965. Some of the teachers I remember were Mrs Lordie, Mr Bettis, Mr Adams and of course Miss Vincent. I had a most enjoyable time, and have remained friends with a few fellow class mates from that time.

  • I was at Leigh Beck 55-61. I remember the teachers well. I enjoyed our time at St Anne’s, where we were taught to play chess by Mr Groves.

  • I was at Leigh Beck 1955-61 too. The year at St. Anne’s was the best year of all. Mr Groves was such a wonderful person and allowed us so much freedom. I remember the joy of being picked to make his camp coffee on the old gas stove, while he sat swathed in pipe tobacco smoke. Mid day we would walk or ride the back road to have lunch at the main school hall. In those days even lumpy mash from the metal churns tasted good. Does anyone else get strange looks when you say you put your hand up for ‘secs’?
I also remember the next year when we helped build the swimming pool – well we helped push the wrinkles out of the plastic on the bottom. I wonder how many years children learned to swim in it.
This comment may be a bit late but I had forgotten the site existed as I have been away so long.
