VE Day 75th Anniversary

8th May 2020

Two photos from Canvey’s VE celebrations in 1945 and others from the 50th anniversary in 1995.

If you take photos at your street’s 75th anniversary VE party during these strange times please upload them so we are recording the event for future.

A lot of people have sent in photos of this years street parties. They can be seen in our slideshow.

VE Party 1945. Charlie Ford explains, “that is our home in the back ground and the woman on the extreme right of the picture is Mrs Louise (Lou) Kneller, a wonderful caring person and a very close friend of my family. Lou lived at 44 Leigh rd. Moving a bit to the left the boy in the tie and wearing a paper head band is Alan Todd (next door neighbour) and next to him is Derek Lou’s son and directly in front of him, a little fair haired boy wearing braces on his pants is my younger brother David. That’s me on Derek’s right, hands in pockets and looking surly and bored. Lou worked for many years as a part time bar maid at the Monico Pub so some of your readers may remember her.”
Not Guy Fawkes at all, this photo was taken in 1945, at the end of the war. The “guy” is actually an effigy of Hitler, and was burnt later.(No wonder they are wearing summer clothes). Standing at the back is David Dedman. Back row from left: Roberta (Bobbie) Jennings, cousin Jean Jarvis, Winnie Dedman, Joyce Dedman. Front row from left: Colin Jarvis, Alan Jennings, Val Hazleton, Eric Jennings, David Jarvis.
