A Smartie way to help

Echo article 1986

These brownies hit upon a Smartie way to help the blind.

Their Brown Owl, Mrs Diane Smith, gave them each a tube of Smarties and allowed them to eat the lot _ so long as they refilled the tubes with 5p pieces. The idea helped raise £305, which Mrs Smith presented to Mr Eric Whittle of the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association.

Mr Whittle went to the 7th Canvey West Brownies’ meeting at St Katheine’s School, Hilton Road, Canvey, with his guide dog Paddy.

The girls also held a 2p fair when the charge at every sideshow and refreshment was just two pence and did a sponsored walk around part of the sea wall, Canvey.

They chose the guide dogs as their charity at visiting the association’s training headquarters Woodford Bridge, Essex, seeing videos and hearing talks from blind people.

The brownies originally aimed to raise £250 in a year, but had beaten their target after six month?
