Napier Villa name post.

Can you help?

A name post is all that’s left to show the existence of one of the Island’s old houses. It stands on the corner of Marcos and Crescent Roads.

Napier Villa, does the name ring any bells. We are looking for information about the property and the families that lived there. We know, thanks to Martin Lepley, that the Dockerill family are associated with it between 1946 and 1968. We also know there was a family called Dockerill on Canvey living at ‘Dawn’ Sixty Acres in the 1929 Electoral Roll. I would imagine this is the same family or connected to it. Can anyone tell us please?

We also know, thanks to Martin, that it was probably built between 1929 and 1935 plus the name of the road was then Barello Ave not Crescent Road. In 1939 the property was vacant.

Its position can be seen in the centre bottom of the old map below.

  • This is amazing I remember this name post from the time that the Villa was there. I must have been 5or6 Then it was always freshly painted and I must have passed it 1000s of times since then without realising it still existed. Thank you Archive! Little memories like this are so important. Graham
