Outside the Haystack

Some of my family. Roberts and Vickery, outside The Haystack. Uncle Jim went on to serve in the navy North Sea area. My Nan and her brother Charlie Roberts were on the Island to avoid the air raids in London. They had a sister and half sister who were taken to Canada to be servants for farmers and they were not yet in their teens. Sadly they never saw those two girls again. My grandad in the centre had served in WW1 and was the most loving grandad a young lad could have. He was gassed and was always whistling tunes to assist with his breathing. He made toasting forks out of bits of wire and we would sit together toasting bread in front of the coal fire. The little girl is my lovely cousin Viv who sadly died just a few months ago.
