Environment Agency Archives

We have recently been very fortunate to have received a large file of photos and documents regarding the building of the seawall 1975-1980s from the Environment Agency. I really cannot express how grateful we are to them. The contents are WOW! There are hundreds of photos which all need to be sorted and made web ready before they can be put on our website. So I will be busy over the next few months. But to wet your appetite here is one of the photos from 1977 for you.

  • I remember playing in scar house gun battery. And climbing up the wooden shell rack.lift that took the shells up to the heavy guns.at the top.of building. From case mate chambers below.no health and safety then bless them .was a bit dangerous back then .so tight and narrow,up that lift shaft. And weird to think years later.i was working on the new sea wall.i Finnished in 1982.from sea front to all the way round to benfleet barrier flood barrier canvey point b17 area as we had to break up the canvey point WW2 pill box on corner of sea wall top. With ball and chain on heavy duty crane. Took some time as were so thick with iron reinforced concrete!!!! Wonder if there are photos of that pill box.on canvey point.i had me sandwich and drink at dinner time. Then back to work for company RDL and AWA and Edmond nuttall company. Working with many irishmen. That work hard and great company. Wonderful humour to work with. I was called london boy!!!! The job centre was the admiral jellicoe after the Irish lads had a drink next day. New blokes started next morning. On the sea wall.works!!!! Canvey point is were I signed me name in concrete cement. Gary c foulger 23rd November 1982. Many canvey locals worked on sea wall projects. Wonder were there are. Canvey supplier made a fortune from the works going on. In us getting material from them for the works etc. Wonderful memories. Gary.
