Barely Recognisable Beach House

Only the second time I have seen it without it's turrets

Whilst looking through the hundreds of photos sourced by the Environment Agency for us I came across this great photo taken of the Beach House in 1978. It is only the second photo I have seen of it without it’s turrets.

  • In 1963, Mr F. Thoupos provided an initial plan for the “demolition of and Re-building of Existing Restaurant, Residential accommodation and sanitation accommodation at Beach House, Eastern Esplanade”.

  • Great photo! As a very timid 7 yr old I first bought a lemonade from Fred Thoupos’s cafe (It was a bit intimidated by his accent) in 1950. Interesting that when making his planning application he used his adopted English forename, I always remember his Greek name was Neophitos. Very sad that he passed away at a comparatively early age.
