From Thorney Bay Road to the Village

Taken 28th September 1976

With grateful thanks to The Environment Agency for sourcing these photos for us. They were taken during 1976 when the seawall was being built. These particular photos are survey of the supply route to Thorney Bay. I have cropped them as the bottom part is of the road itself.

It is just as I remember the area when I first moved to the island. I almost expected me to be in them. I was definitely about there then.

  • Great photos. As I remember the chip shop.and first photo I remember old Essex weather board cottages. 1960s. Alongside left of photo .nash the butchers. With rabbits hanging up.and pheasants also.and saw dust on the floor.!!!! Hard ware store.newmans the news agent. My first paper round got 3x three pence. A week. Hell on sunday with the extra magazines. Doing your area Janet. And off licence. Were I took my empty lemonade bottles. Then go round side get more bottles. Then go in the front again Lol. Them old cottages. Were on there last knockings. As a kid I went straight threw one of the ceilings. Landing on some dumped beds.and round the corner were I lived at Laburnum grove.playing.in the old vicarage before it was pulled down.that was scary at night.as I walk past.and playing in the old farm back of king canute public house.!!!!! What a play ground I had.with many canvey village kids. God bless them .great memories for me. I must have been a pain for my mum and dad. Coming in all hours .with my older brothers looking for me. On my adventures. Wally browns cafe on corner. And the smell of coffee and fags. And regent petrol tankers going down haven road.to depot.waving at the lorry drivers. With the odd beep beep. There must be pics of them old essex weather board cottages. That I played in. I do remember one had a great big iron frame bed. Victorian type. With many steel springs. That I went through!!!

  • There are photos of the old cottages Gary. Look in the village pages. They are there.
I used to go to Newman’s and the chippy, Nash’s etc. But I don’t remember if we had papers delivered Gary but got a feeling we did.
