The Lord Braine of Wheatley - Canvey MP 1950-1992
There is much written about Sir Bernard Braine on the internet about his life and career but not a lot about his actual Parliamentary constituency.
Born in 1914 he first became a Member of Parliament in 1950 for Billericay which at that time consisted of the Urban Districts of Billericay, Benfleet, Canvey Island, and Rayleigh.
1955-1983 he was the MP for SE Essex comprising of the Urban Districts of Benfleet, Canvey Island, and Rayleigh.
1983-1992 MP for Castle Point, which again included Canvey Island.
So during the whole of his career as a Member of Parliament he represented Canvey Island.
He was the father of the House from 1987 until he retired in 1992 and was made a life peer Baron Braine of Wheatley.
He died in 2002 at the age of 85.
