Blue Plaque for Clara

Unveiling Heritage Centre, 26th August 2pm.

The archive working with the Town Council will be unveiling a blue plaque commemorating an important Canvey Islander. Clara Grace James was a JP, an activist on women’s rights as well as founder of Canvey’s WI and Labour party.

The archive was first contacted by Graham Watts, who is part of a 5 person committee appointed by the Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Jennifer Tolhurst, to oversee the erection of blue plaques across the county to commemorate the achievements of women.

We felt we wanted to be a part of this and in turn contacted the Town Council to see if they wanted it to be included in their blue plaque plans. It has taken over a year, more like 18 months, what with the Pandemic and on going problems but the day is nearly upon us.

The new details are Heritage Centre, 26th August at 2pm.

  • How absolutely marvellous.
My Grandma said you could not have met a more kindly lady.
She wanted to improve the lives of all women and she did.

  • I am so pleased she is getting recognition for all her work. What a lady. I am proud to be related to her. She was my Great grandmother’s sister.
