The Crossing between Benfleet and Canvey.

Roger Thipthorp collection

With a horse and cart it was possible to cross Benfleet Creek without waiting for the tide to be fully out and if you didn’t want to get your feet wet you could use the ferry – a very unsophisticated but effective little boat.

In the centre background can be seen Waterside Farm while to the right are Waterside Cottages. Both these sets of buildings are still to be seen although Waterside is no longer a farm instead it is the site for the council’s recycling centre.
