The water drunk on the Island is mostly rain water stored in cisterns which is pure and free from lime, but the tanks must be kept perfectly clean, and the water boiled before drinking it. The Leigh Beck Farm Well, after a careful analysis a year ago, showed the water to contain :—
Grains per gallon | ||
Mineral Matter | 69.50 | |
Chlorine | 22.50 | |
Lime | 02.10 | |
Sulphuric acid | 03.90 | |
Oxygen absorbed in three hours | 00.942 |
If this water is preferred to rain water, it can be obtained by all living at Leigh Beck upon paying the trifling rate of 2s 6d. a quarter.
