Canvey Beach scenes in the 1930s
... These pictures are from the Harrison/Bolt family photos. They are clearly taken on Canvey Beaches with some showing the Labworth and detailed pictures of the seawall. Typical beach scene of the 1930’s but look at the background on the left (enlarged in the next picture) You can see in this enlargement the Labworth cafe before the wall was raised If you recognise anyone or any place please make a comment below. ...
Bi-plane over Canvey?
... This photo was with the Harrison/Bolt family photos, so it was taken in the 1930’s-1940’s period and probably on Canvey. Does anyone recognise the bungalows? ...
My Memory About Canvey
... I have many memories about Canvey. I have nearly always owned horses and they have always lived on Canvey. My favourite place on the island is behind Morrisons because there are many bridlepaths behind there for me to ride my horse on. ...
A busy morning on the river
... What a lovely day it was, sitting and relaxing by the river watching the flotillas of boats passing by. ...
Bumble Bee Park, Labworth
Bumble Bee Park In April this year the children from Lubbins Park Primary School planted the new Bumblebee Park at Labworth Park at Canvey’s Seafront. The aim is to attract carder bees to the area. Shrill carder bee (Bombus sylvarum) There are only four habitats in the UK where this rare insect still lives and Canvey is one of them. Canvey children also designed the mosaics which are a feature of the display. I went to see the area for myself and...
A Miniature Holland
... Robert Hallmann What a find. Canvey Island before Hester. Almost makes one sorry he bothered. Like Donald Maxwell, C.W. Wyllie was an artist not only well versed in images, but in words as well. Even with only monotone illustrations, with its Victorian flourishes it reads like a picture book of the area, including the colours in the description. Marvellous. ...
The floods of 1953, I was there
... David Bullock Thanks for sharing these memories Sue ...
The granddaughter
... These are three nice clear pictures taken of the mum and granddaughter from the family photo. The family photo was taken in 1936 which would date the top two at about 1940/41. The bottom one would have been taken about 1936 as the girl is of similar age to the main family photo. If you recognise anyone or any place please make a comment below. ...
my happest day
The best day was when I got my dog. She is a English mastiff called Freda. At first she wasn’t my dog, the owners were cruel to her, they used her to breed puppies and sell them. She was called Freda because her partner was called Floyd but he died of bloat so she was sad. She didn’t look after the puppies, she just lay where floyd was buried. The owners no longer wanted her so they gave her to us. They paid £1,500 from Wales for her. She has blo...
Two interesting pictures
... David Bullock The top photo shows the concrete barrels from the wreck of the Ben Mohr, featured in the Hester Story elsewhere on this website. ...
The snowy day...
... It was a fun time…we woke up in the morning and there was snow all around us! It was the heaviest snowfall Canvey had seen in years. We all gathered around the TV waiting to see if our school had the day off, and it did! All my friends and I grabbed our sledges and rushed to the hills by the lake to have snow ball fights and sledge races, and loads of other cool stuff that you normally don’t get to do everyday. ...
Slides of 1980's Canvey
... I recently took a chance and purchased a photo slide magazine featuring photos of Essex including some of Canvey Island. The slides appear to be from around 1980 and I was delighted to find some rare views of Canvey buildings since gone. Below are a collection of some of the slides although they haven’t scanned very well. Descriptions have been added. More details of the Lighthouse can be found HERE. ...
Clips from DVD donated by John Pharro
... I am afraid this does not do the DVD justice but it is the best we are able to produce. You can see stills from the DVD here. ...
Still pictures from John Pharro's DVD
... These are some of the pictures captured from the DVD John Pharro kindly donated to the Archive. You can see the DVD here. ...
Group pictures from Canvey
... Here are some more pictures from the Harrison/Bolt collection. The first three pictures look like Canvey Island and there are definitely family members here. It looks like the mother from the family group sitting in the wheelbarrow which would make this picture earlier than 1936 If you recognise anyone or any place please make a comment below. ...
A grandson?
... Is this a grandson of the Harrison/Bolt family? Does anyone recognise him? All the pictures for this family are taken during the 1930’s period. I am sure someone can tell me where this picture was taken. The building on the left is very distinctive. Enlargements can be found of the buildings in the gallery below. ...
The Grandmother
Grandmother at the entrance of an anderson shelter during the war? I would say these are three different pictures of the grandmother of the family. The first one she is standing in the anderson shelter which I presume would be during or after the war. The second picture shows the lady with the mother from the family photo (her daughter or possibly daughter in law) in the garden. The last one shows the grandmother again, with possibly their bungal...
A Canvey Family
... This picture was taken on the 13th April 1936 according to the notation on the back of the photo. It is obviously three generations of the same family. Baby, parents and grandparents. It was taken by ‘Snapshots’ Studios of May Avenue, Canvey Island as can be seen by the lower picture. We believe the names Harrison or Bolt may well have something to do with the family. Does anyone recognise the family? Please make a comment below or email in. ...
Some memories of my years at Leigh Beck Primary School
I walked to school across the fields – there weren’t any houses in the area then. I remember Miss Vincent, the headmistress, and Mr Groves who was my teacher in the top class. Because of a mix-up with dates, my birthday being at the end of September, I had to stay in the top class for an extra year before moving on to Secondary School. Mr Groves encouraged us all to make bamboo pipes – he obviously helped with the tuning holes and the mouth piece...

Leigh Beck Baptist Church: Modern Times
1990 – again the church was in interregnum, but not for long! In September 1990 the Church called Chris Newton to become Student Pastor, with the task of preparing the Church for full time ministry at the end of his contracted four years. Chris studied at Spurgeon’s College and preached every other Sunday. His Induction took place on 10th November. Chris quite radically, for Leigh Beck Church, modernised our style of worship. The redevelopment of...
Christmas!
... Christmas last year was brilliant! We got loads of presents and I got a lot of money on top of that! (I eventually went on to buy a laptop!) I think the best bit of the whole holiday was the roast dinner and chocolate advent calenders! What do you think? ...
