Ferry Tales
It must have been at one of those inbetween times when the tide in the Ray was too high to pass the stepping stones dry-footed and before the water was high enough for the ferry boat to operate, but Miss Francis Henderson, daughter of Benfleet vicar Thomas Julius Henderson, M.A. (1859-73), remembered the time when ‘Gladwin the ferryman’ carried the Bishop of London piggy-back across the creek to Canvey. Ferryman Ted Edwards in February 1928 How h...
A Dynasty Of Oggs
In the beginning there was David Ogg, a marine engineer born at Leith, Scotland in 1855, though family tradition says North Berwick. His must have been an eventful life, he had been shipwrecked three times before he settled in London to run a public house at Mile End, the Marquis of Cornwallis. In 1901 the address was 337 Old Ford Road, Poplar/Bow. His wife was Ada M.J., 32 years of age to his 46 years. They had married in the third quarter of 18...
Oysterfleet Farm
Canvey Lake is a remnant of Oyster Creek since the inning by the Dutch. There was an Oysterfleet Farm (see map) which stood to south-west of the arc of the lake, then in the section of Canvey belonging to North Benfleet parish. Old maps show Oysterfleet Farm with some form of enclosure, usually with two building inside it, which most likely amounted to a house and a barn. In his will of 1713 yeoman John Wakelin hinted at the poor state of repair ...
Wreck Hall - Farm of 'A Thousand Years'
... Mike Dean I would be very grateful if anyone could tell me when the Ajax was wrecked on South Shoebury. Ancestors of mine, the Morley family farmed from Wreck Hall from about 1826 or earlier, to about 1863, when Edward Morley died - his sons all having left home for the Hackney and stoke Newington area. ...

Wreck(Rack) Hall Farm and the Morley family
What or who is the connection between Canvey Island and Stoke Newington, North London? As an ‘incomer’ to Canvey I knew little about the Island’s history or the many varied ancestry of it’s residents, both passed and present. So I set about reading and learning finding many surprises. After three decades and with four generations of my family having lived here, I think I can be forgiven for thinking I am no longer an ‘incomer’. Using skills learn...
Memories of Doris Scullard

The Story of Hester's Canvey Island Developments
The Story of one of Canvey’s best known developers, Frederick Hester The Sea Front & Jetty taken from Augustus A. Daly’s ‘A History of Canvey Island’ At the end of the 19th century an entrepreneur had a dream of turning Canvey into an Island holiday resort. Frederick Hester was born in Fulham in 1853, the son of George Hester (reputed to be the last keeper of Putney Bridge) and Catherine (nee Potter) who had six children together. Old Putney brid...
Frederick Hester and Son
Sometimes historic information comes out of the blue. Last August a gentleman by the name of Peter Gorman sent this message from Hemel Hempstead to the Canvey.org Forum: ‘Came across this website whilst googling ‘Frederick Hester’ re the history of my house. Frederick Hester built my house in Boxmoor together with about 8 others in 1885/1886. Great to see a photo of the man!’ Frederick Hester portrait courtesy of his granddaughter Carol Mayers Du...

Ian Hawks Memories
From ‘Folding Boat News’ 1967: “The Firm of G.Prout & Sons was started in 1935 by Mr G. Prout, a keen yachtman who decided to build a foldaway dinghy, which was light and could easliy be taken aboard a yacht. The folding dinghy was tried out by his two sons, Roland and Francis on a duck pond, and it was found to serve its purpose perfectly. In 1937 Mr. Prout started building the dinghies for sale and the family business had started. The War inter...
St Katherine's Churchyard
A graveyard is not something most of us think about. It is there, we see it but we do not think about it. St Katherine’s Churchyard 2008 St Katherine’s graveyard is not an ancient one, the first burial recorded took place in 1813, with early burials taking place at St Mary’s at Benfleet. Not many 19th century headstones can be found and a lot of the 20th century headstones are no longer legible. One of the earliest entries in the Burial Registers...

Does anyone remember the big house that used to be in Northwick Road on Canvey called Thames House, there is a smaller place there now but still with name plaque on the wall still. It is being used now by the Essex Ambulance Service as a depot. I wondered how old the original big house was and its history. Some of my Family lived in it and used the outbuildings in the 1950’s i think. Anyone know anything regarding the house, its history or who li...

Furtherick's 50's disco
In the year 2007, the school had its 50th anniversary and to celebrate this we had a 50’s night. It was great experience for the students and staff as we dressed up and acted like we were living in the 50’s. At about 4:30 the students got to choose if they wanted to attend the disco. We both went and Dulcie dressed up in, White three-quater lengths and a red top. Jesie wore a purple dress and because this was a 50’s dress she got in the paper wit...
