Canvey Wall
... I feel safe because of the wall round Canvey. It is a big wall which makes sure the water doesn’t come over like what happened in 1953. When I walk my dog I walk her at the other side of the wall, so the flood could hit us but it will have to be very strong tides and strong wind!! ...
An Excerpt from WW2 Diary of H.J. Vale
It came as a shock to us to see lorry loads of soldiers suddenly drive along the promenade, on to the beach and hurriedly commence filling sandbags. It came as an even greater shock when a young officer anxiously strode among the reclining holidaymakers to ask if they would join in and help. A request that brought the realisation that this was no beach game and that it looked now as if our worst fears were about to be confirmed. We were taking ou...
Canvey Chronical Cartoons 1933
The Canvey Chronicle was the Island’s longest running pre-war local newspaper. It was founded by Bertram McCave (the father of Fred McCave) in 1931, after his death in 1937 his wife Helvetia continued the Chronicle until the war in 1939 at which time it had to stop publication because of defence regulations restarting in a different format after the war. During the early years a feature of the Chronicle was the cartoons by Phil Blanchard, who was...
The cleanup after the floods of '53
... Robert Hallmann Another piece in the jigsaw. When I first looked for Harry (Jack) Russell I was told his paintings always featured the Chapman Lighthouse somewhere in the design. Obviously that wasn't possible in these sketches. The original mention of this artist can be found under 'Canvey in Art'. I was in touch with one of the artist's sons, but have heard nothing further. ...
George Hoad and his mother's cat
Letter published in the Bulletin in 1983 written by George Hoad It started as a normal Sunday. My wife and I had just sat down to our Sunday dinner when there was a loud knocking on the front door. I went to the door and found my mother collapsed on the door step. I took her into the front room and all she said was, “It’s all gone, the bungalow has floated away, it’s all water.” We calmed her down, gave her a cup of tea and then she told us what ...

Our Lady of Canvey and English Martyr
Taken from ‘Chronicles of and Island’ by Fred McCave which was published in the Bulletin February 1981. There had been for many years a strong Roman Catholic number. When, in November 1912 a priest took over the Leigh mission it included Canvey. In those days going to Mass could take a whole morning. A walk to the ferry, a trip over (or if the tide was out a walk across the stepping stones) and then a train from Benfleet, plus the whole, expediti...
St Nicholas Church
... Alan Hardy I have just seen that St Nicholas church was opened late 1960 and I realised that my wife and I must have been one of the earlier marriages to have taken place there during 1961 having been married by The Rev .Fleetwood on 7th September of that year. How time flys, it will 54 year ago this September. Alan & Cynthia Hardy ...
Letter to The Bulletin January 1983
You may wonder why someone from Sussex is writing to you, but I find your magazine fascinating-such lovely nostalgia for an ex-Islander like myself to wallow in. I have The Bulletin sent to me by my sister who lives on Canvey. In the late twenty’s when I was born my family used to spend happy holidays on the island. They liked it so much that we moved there from London about 1929 or 30. For the next 18 years I was to spend a happy childhood and m...

Waterside

Waterside is a great place to go to with friends and family as you can spend time together while having fun and keeping healthy. You can also have parties there and there are places to eat and drink. Thats why Waterside is my favourite place on Canvey. ...

This year the event was held on Friday 8th May 2009. Normally the day starts with a walk around Canvey Island but due to the very poor weather conditions, Chris did a talk in the Oysterfleet on Dr Feelgood instead. Canvey Island
... This is a picture of the sea front at Canvey and the sea wall. In 1953 when the flood happened the sea wall was only a little wall. So the sea could easily break through and destroy the sea wall. The Sea front years ago was a nice place to play, but now people hardly ever go down to the sea front. Also the sea wall was only made out of stone and brick, so it is easy for the water. ...
My Story
... My story is about the place where I fish called the Black Jetty. It cost £13 million to make and it was never used once. Just in case you wont to know its a good place to fish and its located behind Morrisons. I like it because when you walk to the end it has a really nice view. ...
St Trinians comes to Canvey
... This is a picture from Fred McCave’s 1984 ‘The Bulletin’. Apparently this was in the Admiral Jellicoe. The ‘girls’ at the rear were Jack Windell, Doug Scammell, Teddy Cayton, Charlie Neale, John Lawrence, Date Atwell, Cliff Selby and Peter Dawson. The ‘boys’ and ‘girls’ in the front include Jack Fenwick, Pat Wood (Scammell), Vera Bigsby (Lawrence) and Ken Gordon. The ‘Boys’ were ‘The gentry of Narkover College’ ...

Fun on the Lake
My Dad bought his house backing onto the lake because of the uninterrupted view right across the island to Hadleigh Castle- so he was a bit annoyed when the Lawrence Housing Estate was built (he had been told the ground was too marshy ever to be built on). However, during its construction (around the mid 1970’s- it was finished by ’76), large blocks of polystyrene foam ended up in the lake- and they made great rafts for kids! I got one, and shape...
My Dads Time On Canvey
... When my dad had just moved to Canvey he used to go and play at Thorney Bay alot. There were Forts near the sea wall and he pretended to be in the army and tried to catch rabbits and shoot the ships that passed by. The houses next to Thorney Bay were never there it was just loads of trees and wood so then he made alot of camps and sleep there with his mates. ...
My Snow Day 09
It was 9:00am I woke up feeling cold. I went down stairs to eat a warm breakfast until I looked out my back door and the whole garden was white. I was really confused I ran in and grabbed some shoes and jumped into the garden and my feet sunk into to the white fluffy stuff realizing it was snow. I was really happy that snow had come this year as there was no snow last year. So I rushed my breakfast down my throat and ran up stairs to get dressed....
The lake
... Our Fishing Day Out One of the places I go on Canvey is the lake. Once me, my brother and Dad did some “fishin” as we call it. We saw 2 fish about 16 inches long maybe longer, fly out the lake. We did this last summer because my brother got a fishing license for the year. ...
