Benfleet Creek and the Canvey coastline, vital habitats for rare wild birds, have been recognised as a crucial conservation area by Castle Point Council.
The council signed a pledge drawn up by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds to protect the coastline and manage it with the needs of wildlife conservation in mind.
The pledge, signed by new Mayor Peggy Grant, asserts: “Our coast is a priceless natural asset. It is cherished by the people and forms a vita; lifeline for wildlife. It is a precious resource which must be carefully managed for future generations.”
The pledge commits the council to ‘undertake to promote its value and manage wisely coastal matters within our control for people and wildlife’.
