Living in squalor to prove a point

Home from home: Volunteers get to grips with sleeping rough in their shanty town 'home'.

This “home” was made from bits and pieces scavenged from tips. And to prove a point in Christian Aid Week. St Nicholas’ Church worker Tim Clapton is sleeping in the Canvey shanty all week with a rota of young volunteers.

There were some unwelcome visitors the first night. A party of young drunks jumped on the roof, but Tim said: “When we talked to them and explained we wanted to show people how families have to live in these sort of hovels in the Third World shanty towns, they got really interested.”

“They apologised, helped us put the roof back and offered to come and help next day. One boy said he was homeless himself.”

The shanty home is on a field at Furtherwick Park School
